Privacy Policy
Last updated: August 2, 2026
Recoup ("Recoup," "we," "us") is a price-tracking app for iOS. This policy explains
what information the app collects, how it's used, and the choices you have. Recoup is
currently developed and operated by an individual developer, not a company — if that
changes, this policy will be updated to reflect it.
1. Information We Collect
Account & device identity
- Anonymous account. The app creates an anonymous account for you
automatically on first launch — no sign-up is required to use it. This account is
identified by a random ID, not by your name or email.
- Sign in with Apple (optional). If you choose to link an Apple ID
in Settings so your data survives a reinstall, we receive whatever Apple shares for
that sign-in (typically your name and/or a private relay or real email address,
depending on what you choose to share with Apple).
- Device identifier. A random identifier stored in your device's
Keychain is used to apply free-tier usage limits fairly, even across reinstalls. It
is not Apple's advertising identifier (IDFA) and is not used for advertising or
cross-app tracking.
- App Check attestation. Apple's App Attest is used to verify that
requests to our servers come from a genuine, unmodified copy of the app. This does
not identify you personally.
Watchlist & receipt data
- Items you track — product name, store, price paid, current
price, product page link, and the return/price-check window you set.
- Receipt photos and PDFs you upload to itemize a purchase. These
are processed by Google's Gemini AI to read the store name, items, prices, and
dates off the receipt (see "AI Processing" below), then stored so you can review,
re-scan, or export them later.
- Alert email address(es) you enter in Settings, used to send
price-drop and receipt-export emails. These can be different from the email tied to
your Apple ID.
Usage & diagnostic data
- Product usage events (e.g. a scan completed, an item was added,
a receipt was reviewed) via Firebase Analytics, used to understand which parts of
the app are actually useful and to fix what isn't.
- Crash reports via Firebase Crashlytics, used to find and fix
bugs. These can include device model, OS version, and the state of the app at the
time of a crash.
Subscription data
If you subscribe to a paid plan, the purchase is handled entirely by Apple — Recoup
never sees your payment card details. We receive, via RevenueCat, confirmation of
which plan you're on and whether it's active, so the app can unlock the right features
for your account.
2. AI Processing of Receipts (Gemini)
When you scan a receipt, the photo or PDF is sent to Google's Gemini API to extract
the store name, items, prices, and date. This is the only automated use we make of
receipt content. Google processes this data under its own API terms; we do not use
receipt photos to train any model ourselves, and we do not sell or share receipt
content with advertisers.
3. How We Share Information
We don't sell your information. Data is shared only with the service providers
("subprocessors") needed to run the app:
| Provider | Purpose |
| Google Firebase | Authentication, database, file storage, backend
functions, analytics, crash reporting, bot-abuse protection |
| Google Gemini API | Reading receipt photos/PDFs into structured data |
| ScraperAPI | Fetching publicly listed prices from retailer websites you
ask us to track |
| SendGrid (Twilio) | Sending price-drop and receipt-export emails you've
opted into |
| Apple | Sign in with Apple, App Store purchases, App Attest |
| RevenueCat | Managing subscription status |
We may also disclose information if required by law, or to protect the rights,
safety, or property of Recoup or our users.
4. Data Retention
- A scanned receipt you haven't reviewed expires automatically after 14 days.
- A reviewed (archived) receipt is kept for up to 1 year, then automatically
removed.
- Watchlist items are kept until you remove them or delete your account.
- Deleting your account (see below) removes all of the above immediately.
5. Your Choices
- Delete your account and data anytime from Settings → Delete
Account & Data (shown once you've linked an Apple ID). This permanently removes
your watchlist, receipts, and account data from our systems.
- Turn off automatic emails anytime in Settings → Automatic
Emails.
- Request access or deletion manually by emailing us at the
address below if you'd rather not use the in-app flow.
6. Children's Privacy
Recoup is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect
information from them.
7. Security
We use industry-standard practices (encryption in transit, access-controlled cloud
infrastructure) to protect your information, but no method of transmission or storage
is 100% secure.
8. International Users
Recoup is available in the US and Canada. Data is processed on Google Cloud/Firebase
infrastructure, which may store and process data in the United States regardless of
where you use the app.
9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy as the app changes. Material changes will be reflected by
updating the "Last updated" date above; continued use of the app after a change means
you accept the updated policy.
